Oceana – Oceans of Opportunity: The Economic Case for Rebuilding Northern Cod

Oceans of Opportunity: The economic case for rebuilding northern cod highlights that a rebuilt northern cod fishery could provide 16 times more jobs and have a net present value worth up to five times more than today. With low fishing pressure and favourable environmental conditions, the fishery could recover in as few as 11 years, supporting economic activities worth $233 million in today’s dollars.

Oceana: Government goes against its own policy, fails to support the recovery of another cod stock

Yesterday, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) announced that they will close the directed Atlantic cod fishery on the Scotian Shelf/Bay of Fundy but will maintain the existing harvest levels of 825 tonnes as bycatch. This goes against DFO’s own policy to keep all sources of fishing mortality to the lowest possible level.
