OceanCanada Research Director, Dr. Rashid Sumaila is the author of a new report titled “Trade Policy Options for Sustainable Oceans and Fisheries” presented at the 2016 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The paper is part of a larger package of policy recommendations by the E15Initiative focused on strengthening the global trade and investment system in the 21st century.
Jointly implemented by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and the World Economic Forum, the E15Initiative convenes world-class experts and institutions to generate strategic analysis and recommendations for government, business and civil society geared towards strengthening the global trade and investment system for sustainable development.
The E15Initiative policy options paper reflect three years of interactive dialogues, co-led with 16 top knowledge institutions, between more than 375 leading experts from developed and developing countries drawn from different fields and backgrounds. These deliberations generated a fresh look at the long-term challenges and opportunities facing the global trade and investment system, especially with respect to its efficacy, inclusiveness, and contribution to sustainable development.
Dr. Sumaila served as Theme Leader of the E15 Expert Group on Oceans, Fisheries and the Trade System. The “Trade Policy Options for Sustainable Oceans and Fisheries” paper is the result of a collective process drawing on the active engagement of these eminent experts in discussions over multiple meetings as well as an overview paper and think pieces commissioned by the E15Initiative and authored by group members.
A spinoff of the work of the E15 on Fisheries and Oceans is the publication of a Special Issue of Marine Policy titled “Oceans Fisheries and the Trade System”. It contains 8 peer-reviewed papers now in press. These papers, with Rashid Sumaila, Alice Tipping and Christophe Bellmann as guest editors, explore global trade policies in the context of environmental, social and economic dimensions of ocean fisheries.
